‘Captain Marvel’ Brings On the Girl Power

It only seems right that Captain Marvel is being released on 2019’s International Women's Day. Since 2008’s Iron-Man, Marvel has presented a good chain, albeit a bit short, of strong women characters starting with Pepper Potts. Black Widow became the first Marvel female superhero to grace the screens in Iron-Man 2 followed by Scarlet Witch, Gamora, Mantis, The Wasp, Okoye and Shuri. But today, Brie Larson heads the first female-driven superhero movie for Marvel Studios.

Let’s just get this out of the way – this movie packs a “girl power” punch without putting men down in the process. While their intentions are good, too many films try to present a message of female empowerment while emasculating men in the process. Sure, the opposite has been true for many years, but this is no way to move on with injustice and certainly isn’t a message that today’s girls need to here.

America’s Got Talent Will See New Faces This Summer

During Monday’s presentation of America’s Got Talent: The Champions celebrating the best of the best from around the world comes news that the show will look a bit differently when it airs again this summer. NBC has announced that two of the show’s judges, Heidi Klum and Mel B will not be judging the next go around says the Orlando Sentinel. Actress Gabrielle Union and former Dancing with the Stars dancer and judge, Julianne Hough will be stepping in sitting alongside Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel. Terry Crews, who stepped in for The Champions competition, will continue to host taking the place of Tyra Banks.

“One of the many secrets to the success and longevity of America’s Got Talent is its fearless drive to reinvent itself,” said Meredith Ahr, president, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. “The next evolution of the format brings in fresh expert eyes to join Simon and Howie on the panel. Gabrielle and Julianne are two of the most aspirational women in the business, on top of being electric entertainers with talent across disciplines.”

Now that the comedy Brooklyn Nine Nine in now an NBC show, Terry Crews is now part of the NBC flock. The same might be said about Hough whose brother Derek, also a former dancer on Dancing with the Stars, has been a part of the peacock family after appearing in the musical Hairspray Live and now serving as a judge on the network’s other big summer show, World of Dance. Today's news didn't give any details of why Klum or Mel B would be leaving the series.

America’s Got Talent: The Champions will award the show’s winner on Monday, February 18.
