‘Captain Marvel’ Brings On the Girl Power

MOVIE REVIEW
It only seems right that Captain Marvel is being released on 2019’s International Women's Day. Since 2008’s Iron-Man, Marvel has presented a good chain, albeit a bit short, of strong women characters starting with Pepper Potts. Black Widow became the first Marvel female superhero to grace the screens in Iron-Man 2 followed by Scarlet Witch, Gamora, Mantis, The Wasp, Okoye and Shuri. But today, Brie Larson heads the first female-driven superhero movie for Marvel Studios.

Let’s just get this out of the way – this movie packs a “girl power” punch without putting men down in the process. While their intentions are good, too many films try to present a message of female empowerment while emasculating men in the process. Sure, the opposite has been true for many years, but this is no way to move on with injustice and certainly isn’t a message that today’s girls need to here.

NSYNC First #1 Hit Song

The famed American boy band, NSYNC, was formed in 1995 and consisted of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass. It is said that the group got inspiration for its name from Timberlake’s mother who had commented on how “in sync” all of their voices were together. Though extremely popular from the get go, it wasn’t until this day in 2000 that one of the group’s songs make it to the top of the list. “It’s Gonna Be Me” was the second single released from the group’s No Strings Attached album which sold over 9.9 million copies. Over the years, the band has sold over 70 million albums. Though the group was nominated for seven different Grammy awards, they never won any. Though their last album came out in 2001, it wasn’t until 2007 that the NSYNC actually confirmed that they were no longer a group.

Charles and Di Get Married

Prince Charles and Diana were wed on this in 1981. The wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer took place on this day in 1981 at St Paul's Cathedral in London. The spectacle created a media frenzy calling the event the "Wedding of the Century". Hundreds of items were created with the pair’s smiling faces. Approximately 3,500 people attended the wedding in person while another 750 million watched from their TVs. Many in America attended viewing parties during the middle of the night. Sadly, the couple separated in 1992 and later divorced in 1996. Charles and Di’s son, Prince William married Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011 and the couple appears to be living a happier life than they did. (Photo: Flickr)
