'Puzzle' is Well Made, but a Few Pieces are Missing

MOVIE REVIEW
Based on the film Rompecabezas, Puzzle is one of those little-known independent films that sneaks into theaters with little to no fanfare, although the fact that it is being promoted “from the producer of Little Miss Sunshine” should help it get noticed somewhat. Puzzle is a quiet, little film about a woman who discovers that jigsaw puzzles are the key to changing her life. While the subject matter doesn’t sound all that exciting, the film really isn’t about puzzles but instead about one finding their voice, or so it appears. It’s also a message film that has its own agenda expecting the audience to agree with the choices of the main character and applaud her “brave” behavior. Frankly, it just feels manipulative.

Directed by Marc Turtletaub, Puzzle’s most impactful scene comes within the first few minutes. We see Agnes (Kelly MacDonald) cleaning up the house and they decorating it for a birthday party. Then we see her serving appetizers while being ignored by the guests. …

This Day in Pop Culture for June 9

The movie "Cars" was released in theaters on June 9, 2006.
Pixar’s ‘Cars’ is Released in Theaters
The last independent Pixar movie (before the company was purchased by Disney) was Cars which was released in theaters on this day in 2006. Director John Lasseter also wrote the script as a loving tribute to Route 66 and all its small towns and oddities. The story revolves around a world of anthropomorphic cars featuring race car Lightning McQueen who finds himself in the small town of Radiator Springs as a fish out of water. The movie premiered on May 26, 2006 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards and won an Oscar as well as a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. The movie was popular enough to warrant a sequel, Cars 2, in 2011 (which didn’t fare was well with critics) and a second, Cars 3, to be released on June 16, 2017. The franchise also got its own “land” at Disney’s California Adventure theme park which proved to give the park a much needed boost in attendance.

Bishop T.D. Jakes was born on June 9, 1957.

T. D. Jakes is Born

On this day in 1957, little Thomas Dexter Jakes was born and became Bishop T. D. Jakes, one of the most popular African American pastors of all time. His church, The Potter’s House located in Dallas, Texas servers about 30,000 members and services are televised on TBN, BET, Daystar, The Word Network and the Miracle Channel. Jakes has written over 30 books, been involved with over eight movies (including 2013’s Black Nativity and 2014’s Heaven is for Real) and he has been married to the same woman, Serita Ann Jamison, since 1981. The big pastor with the big voice looks intimidating in photos, but in person, is one of the nicest guys that you’ll ever meet.
