The Meg is Closer to ‘Jaws’ Than ‘Sharknado’

MOVIE REVIEW When Steven Spielberg’s Jaws opened in theaters in 1975, it took the world by storm. Not only was the movie hugely popular as it was genuinely scary, it actually affected society in a strange way. Audiences began to have an irrational fear of sharks even when swimming at a lake. When Jaws 2 came to theaters three years later, everyone knew the catchphrase, “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…” Since then, it’s been hard for movie studios to be able to drum up the same excitement with their own Jaws knock-offs. Shark movies became a joke. Even Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge were met with disdain (and with good reason). But sharks are still a popular subject, just not one that we take very seriously anymore.
This brings us to next big shark movie, The Meg which judging from the trailers alone, looks like another campy knock-off movie and while it indeed is campy, it isn’t as much as you would think. When comparing movies, The Meg is closer to Jaws tha…

This Day in Pop Culture for June 8

Kanye West was born on June 8, 1977.

Kanye West is Born

It was on this day in 1977 that little Kanye Omair West was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a former Black Panther and English professor. West briefly attended art school before becoming a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s. He helped to produce hit singles for Jay Z and Alicia Keys and then released his own rap album, The College Dropout, in 2004. He then went on to found the record label GOOD Music and tried his hand at different musical styles. As West became better known he also became more vocal on his personal beliefs often causing disruption. In 2005 he publicly criticized President George W. Bush during a TV broadcast for Hurricane Katrina relief, interrupted Taylor Swift during her award acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and in 2015 at the end of one of his concerts, West proclaimed himself "the greatest living rock star on the planet." West is more than just music. He is also a fashion designer working with brands such as Nike, Louis Vuitton, Bape, Giuseppe Zanotti and Adidas. In 2014 he married Kim Kardashian. Although known for making headlines for all the wrong reasons, West is also one of the best-selling artists of all time selling more than 32 million albums. He has won 21 Grammy Awards and Time has named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world twice; once in 2005 and 2015. His most recent release, The Life of Pablo, was released in 2016.

George Orwell's "1984" was published on June 8, 1948.
‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ is Published
On this day in 1948, “1984” was published. The dystopian, science fiction novel by George Orwell was a warning of sorts about the consequences of a dictatorial society. In the book, natural feelings and emotions are forbidden, family values are destroyed and perhaps the most terrifying of all, chocolate is extremely hard to find! Phrases such as “Big brother is watching,” “doublethink” and “memory hole” have become part of our culture. In 2005, Time magazine included the book in their list of 100 Best English Language Novels.
