‘Captain Marvel’ Brings On the Girl Power

MOVIE REVIEW
It only seems right that Captain Marvel is being released on 2019’s International Women's Day. Since 2008’s Iron-Man, Marvel has presented a good chain, albeit a bit short, of strong women characters starting with Pepper Potts. Black Widow became the first Marvel female superhero to grace the screens in Iron-Man 2 followed by Scarlet Witch, Gamora, Mantis, The Wasp, Okoye and Shuri. But today, Brie Larson heads the first female-driven superhero movie for Marvel Studios.

Let’s just get this out of the way – this movie packs a “girl power” punch without putting men down in the process. While their intentions are good, too many films try to present a message of female empowerment while emasculating men in the process. Sure, the opposite has been true for many years, but this is no way to move on with injustice and certainly isn’t a message that today’s girls need to here.

Yesterday, Zach Williams won his first Grammy award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album, Chain Breaker. He beat out Danny Gokey’s Rise, Matt Maher’s Echoes, MercyMe’s Lifer and Tauren Well’s Hills and Valleys.

"I'm blown away and completely shocked.” Said Williams about the win. “I’m a huge fan of everyone in the category and honored to win. But without God none of this would be possible."

Now with a Grammy Award, Williams' 2018 kicked off to a great start as well when his debut radio single, "Chain Breaker," officially achieved official RIAA gold certification. The single, holding at No. 1 for 15 weeks, was followed by “Old Church Choir,” which became the most successful Christian radio single in over a decade when it held the top spot at radio for 20 weeks, making it the second longest running No. 1 single in Billboard's Christian radio history. Williams also made history as the first debut artist to have two back-to-back No. 1 singles.

Williams was also one of artists featured in New York Times’ “The Grammy Gems You Won’t Hear on ‘Music’s Biggest Night’" where author Jon Caramanica said of the artist, “There is often a meditative moan at the core of much contemporary Christian rock, but rarely is there a real growl. For this reason alone, Zach Williams’s “Chain Breaker,”… is refreshing. Mr. Williams sings with real heaviness, enacting a tactile cycle of exhaustion and redemption.”
