The Meg is Closer to ‘Jaws’ Than ‘Sharknado’

MOVIE REVIEW When Steven Spielberg’s Jaws opened in theaters in 1975, it took the world by storm. Not only was the movie hugely popular as it was genuinely scary, it actually affected society in a strange way. Audiences began to have an irrational fear of sharks even when swimming at a lake. When Jaws 2 came to theaters three years later, everyone knew the catchphrase, “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…” Since then, it’s been hard for movie studios to be able to drum up the same excitement with their own Jaws knock-offs. Shark movies became a joke. Even Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge were met with disdain (and with good reason). But sharks are still a popular subject, just not one that we take very seriously anymore.

Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel Star in Disney ‘Magical Holiday Celebration’

Tony Award®-winning actress Idina Menzel joins fellow Frozen star Kristen Bell to perform together for the very first time on primetime television, during The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration airing this Thursday. Menzel and Bell will perform “When We’re Together” from the featurette, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure. Joined by an extraordinary 30-piece choir from the steps of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Resort in California, the spectacular finale performance is not to be missed.

“This performance will combine two of my very favorite things: the holidays and singing alongside my Frozen sister,” said Bell. “I’m excited to sing a song with Idina that I feel has the potential to become a new holiday classic.”

Said Menzel: “Anytime I get to reunite with Kristen, whether it’s in the studio or on the stage, is very special for me. I think I can speak for her when I say we are both so proud of this story we get to tell and these sisters we get to portray.”

Julianne Hough and Nick Lachey host the two-hour event from the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. They join co-host, Jesse Palmer, to kick off the holiday season showcasing incredible music performances, special appearances and some unforgettable Disney magic moments including an extraordinary castle lighting spectacular from Disney Parks around the world – traveling the globe from Lake Buena Vista, Florida, and Anaheim, California, to Paris, Shanghai and Hong Kong.


Musical performances include:

  • Ciara performs a joyful Christmas medley from Cinderella Castle.
  • Darius Rucker sings “Winter Wonderland.”
  • Fifth Harmony sings “Can You See,” from The Star soundtrack, plus “The Christmas Song.”
  • Fitz and the Tantrums performs their hit, “HandClap,” in addition to their original Christmas song, “Santa Stole My Lady.”
  • Hanson, will sing “Finally It’s Christmas,” from their recently released Christmas album.
  • In Real Life, the only boy band in history voted together by America, will sing “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”
  • Jason Derulo performs “This Christmas.”
  • Lea Michele and Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block sing “Baby It’s Cold Outside.”

The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration airs Thursday, November 30 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
