The Meg is Closer to ‘Jaws’ Than ‘Sharknado’

MOVIE REVIEW When Steven Spielberg’s Jaws opened in theaters in 1975, it took the world by storm. Not only was the movie hugely popular as it was genuinely scary, it actually affected society in a strange way. Audiences began to have an irrational fear of sharks even when swimming at a lake. When Jaws 2 came to theaters three years later, everyone knew the catchphrase, “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…” Since then, it’s been hard for movie studios to be able to drum up the same excitement with their own Jaws knock-offs. Shark movies became a joke. Even Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge were met with disdain (and with good reason). But sharks are still a popular subject, just not one that we take very seriously anymore.

Melissa McCarthy is Born

American actress, comedian, producer and screenwriter Melissa McCarthy was born on this day in 1970. She first got people’s attention in 2000 playing the role of Sookie St. James for the Gilmore Girls TV series, a role she would continue to play through 2009 (and then again years later in the 2016 reboot of the show). McCarthy also starred in the ABC comedy, Samantha Who? from 2007-2009 and then became well-known acting in the CBS comedy, Mike & Molly from 2010-2016. Her most recent role was as a Ghosterbuster in the recent reboot of that franchise.

'Mary Poppins' Premieres

It was this day in 1964 that Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke attended the premiere of the classic musical, Mary Poppins along with Walt Disney and P. L. Travers, the author of the book of the same name. Music was composed by the Sherman Brothers who went on to compose many more songs for the Disney Company. The film was unique in that if featured an animated/live action sequence with cartoon penguins dancing with Van Dyke. It was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and won five for Best Actress for Andrews, Best Film Editing, Original Music Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee."  In 2013, the film Saving Mr. Banks, telling the story behind of the story of the making of the film, arrived in theaters with Emma Thompson playing the role of Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. In 2018, Emily Blunt will be filling in for Andrews playing Poppins in the long awaited sequel, Mary Poppins Returns.
