The Ultimate Guide to Christmas Specials

Christmas TV specials, limited series and movies are bigger than ever these days from now until the New Year, you’ll be able to find some festive yule-tide programming every night of the week. From the traditional viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life, the different versions of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, to baking shows and live music specials, we’ve got them all listed on the new Christmas TV Specials page. (Since not all of the networks list their specials early, this list will be updated throughout the coming weeks, so check back often for new additions!)

Disneyland Resort Features ‘Summer of Heroes’ and Space Mountain

Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney)

We’re about a month away from Disney California Adventure Park’s “Summer of Heroes” blasting off on May 27. The event is headlined by the highly anticipated grand opening of the new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! “This new adventure blasts you straight into the “Guardians of the Galaxy” story for the first time ever, alongside characters from the blockbuster films and comics,” reports Erin Glover, Editorial Content Director for Disneyland Resort.

Disney says that Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT! will take guests through the fortress of The Collector, who is keeping the Guardians as prisoners. Instead of the Hollywood Hotel elevator used in the former Tower of Terror ride, guests will now board a "gantry lift" where they will meet up with Rocket in hopes of freeing his fellow Guardians. "As guests join Rocket in his attempt to bust his pals out of The Collector's Fortress, they will experience randomized ride experiences complete with new visual and audio effects and music inspired by the popular film soundtracks."

Other events featured at the park this summer include:
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! - This old-school dance party will play out on the Disney streets of Hollywood Land with Star-Lord kickin’ off tunes from his boom box.
  • Super Hero Encounters - New costumed superheroes will begin to roam about the park including Groot, Captain America and Spider-Man.
  • Avengers Training Initiative - Other Marvel superheroes, Black Widow and Hawkeye will be on hand to train young recruits to see if they have the necessary skills to become a member of The Avengers. I have a pretty good idea that most who try out, will.
  • Heroic Encounter: Black Widow - Black Widow will also be making the rounds in an armored Avengers vehicle for her “heroic encounter with park guests.”
“Summer of Heroes” will continue through September 10.

Then, in celebration of the theme park’s 40th anniversary (gasp), the classic version of Space Mountain will return to Disneyland beginning on June 1. “A variation of a concept Walt Disney developed in the 1960s, Space Mountain first opened at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort in 1975, and construction on Space Mountain at Disneyland park began soon after,” says Glover. “The attraction went on to become a guest favorite, seeing special themed versions such as Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and Hyperspace Mountain.” Here’s the original 1977 TV commercial for the ride:
