‘Captain Marvel’ Brings On the Girl Power

It only seems right that Captain Marvel is being released on 2019’s International Women's Day. Since 2008’s Iron-Man, Marvel has presented a good chain, albeit a bit short, of strong women characters starting with Pepper Potts. Black Widow became the first Marvel female superhero to grace the screens in Iron-Man 2 followed by Scarlet Witch, Gamora, Mantis, The Wasp, Okoye and Shuri. But today, Brie Larson heads the first female-driven superhero movie for Marvel Studios.

Let’s just get this out of the way – this movie packs a “girl power” punch without putting men down in the process. While their intentions are good, too many films try to present a message of female empowerment while emasculating men in the process. Sure, the opposite has been true for many years, but this is no way to move on with injustice and certainly isn’t a message that today’s girls need to here.

The Big 10: Actors You Forgot Were on 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse'

1.    Lawrence Fishburne
Known for his work in The Matrix series, Fishburne played Cowboy Curtis. Think 1950’s squeaky clean cowboy with a mullet.

Known for her roles in the American Pie movie series and Orange is the New Black TV series, Lyonne played one of the Playhouse Gang children.

6.    Alisan Porter
Porter is known for starring in the film Curly Sue and most recently won season 10 of The Voice, Porter also played one of the Playhouse Gang children.

7.    Bernard Fox
Fox played Dr. Bombay on Bewitched and Colonel Crittendon on Hogan’s Heroes before appearing as Dr. Jinga Janga who would appear when Jambi (a genie played by John Paragon) would get sick.

8.    Calvert DeForest
Better known as Larry “Bud” Melman on Late Night with David Letterman, DeForest played Rusty, an old man that acted just like one of the Playhouse Gang children.

9.    Sandra Bernhard
Comedian Bernhard played Rhonda, the Picturephone operator who had a crush on Pee-Wee.

10.    Phil Hartman
Known for his work on Saturday Night Live and the sitcom NewsRadio, Hartman played Captain Carl, a sea captain who brought odd things from the ocean for show and tell.
