'Puzzle' is Well Made, but a Few Pieces are Missing

Based on the film Rompecabezas, Puzzle is one of those little-known independent films that sneaks into theaters with little to no fanfare, although the fact that it is being promoted “from the producer of Little Miss Sunshine” should help it get noticed somewhat. Puzzle is a quiet, little film about a woman who discovers that jigsaw puzzles are the key to changing her life. While the subject matter doesn’t sound all that exciting, the film really isn’t about puzzles but instead about one finding their voice, or so it appears. It’s also a message film that has its own agenda expecting the audience to agree with the choices of the main character and applaud her “brave” behavior. Frankly, it just feels manipulative.

Directed by Marc Turtletaub, Puzzle’s most impactful scene comes within the first few minutes. We see Agnes (Kelly MacDonald) cleaning up the house and they decorating it for a birthday party. Then we see her serving appetizers while being ignored by the guests. …

(Nickolodeon Movies)
I never really understood the appeal of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not intrigued with the new reboot by Nickelodeon Movies coming to theaters on August 8th.

It looks like a film that won’t take itself too seriously and will be something that the whole family can enjoy. However, some are skeptical, including me, of the choice of director: Michael Bay. Sure, Bay can put together big blow-em-up pictures to screen, but he doesn’t appreciate the art of subtlety. He also doesn’t seem to understand what is appropriate for his audiences. Bay has been responsible for the Transformers movies stories, you know, stories based on a TOY. His movies contain scenes and dialogue that is not appropriate for the kids who actually play with Transformers. Hopefully, working with Nickelodeon, will help clean up his act.

Here is the basic synopsis of the film: Darkness has covered the city of New York as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have taken control of the city. Just as the night becomes its darkest, four unlikely heroes emerge…from the sewer. The film stars Megan Fox as reporter April O’Neil, Will Arnett as her cameraman and of course, the fab four, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo who all look alike except for their colored masks.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here is the first trailer:

If you like what you see, vote for your favorite TMNT here. Each vote allows a little more of the poster of that turtle to be revealed. Once all four have been revealed, a new movie trailer will be unlocked. So, you can see that this is a group effort.
