Shyamalan's 'Glass' is Engaging Almost Until the End

MOVIE REVIEW
I don’t think anyone will deny that M. Night Shyamalan is a great storyteller. He initially proved that with the release of The Sixth Sense. The symbolism of the color red, the odd scenes that made very little sense until the end of the movie and of course, the amazing twist that nobody saw coming. That incredible twist has almost been the director’s undoing. Since 1999, not one of his other movie’s endings have had the same impact, but he continues to try.

In 2000, Mr. Shyamalan hoped that lightening would strike twice with Unbreakable which also starred Bruce Willis. Like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable was a mystery only this time, the story featured the lone survivor of a train crash who left the accident without a scratch on him and an incredibly fragile, wheelchair-bound, comic book enthusiast which appeared to be the polar opposite. I never really understood the appeal of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not intrigued with the new reboot by Nickelodeon Movies coming to theaters on August 8th.

It looks like a film that won’t take itself too seriously and will be something that the whole family can enjoy. However, some are skeptical, including me, of the choice of director: Michael Bay. Sure, Bay can put together big blow-em-up pictures to screen, but he doesn’t appreciate the art of subtlety. He also doesn’t seem to understand what is appropriate for his audiences. Bay has been responsible for the Transformers movies stories, you know, stories based on a TOY. His movies contain scenes and dialogue that is not appropriate for the kids who actually play with Transformers. Hopefully, working with Nickelodeon, will help clean up his act.

Here is the basic synopsis of the film: Darkness has covered the city of New York as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have taken control of the city. Just as the night becomes its darkest, four unlikely heroes emerge…from the sewer. The film stars Megan Fox as reporter April O’Neil, Will Arnett as her cameraman and of course, the fab four, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo who all look alike except for their colored masks.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here is the first trailer:
