The Meg is Closer to ‘Jaws’ Than ‘Sharknado’

MOVIE REVIEW When Steven Spielberg’s Jaws opened in theaters in 1975, it took the world by storm. Not only was the movie hugely popular as it was genuinely scary, it actually affected society in a strange way. Audiences began to have an irrational fear of sharks even when swimming at a lake. When Jaws 2 came to theaters three years later, everyone knew the catchphrase, “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…” Since then, it’s been hard for movie studios to be able to drum up the same excitement with their own Jaws knock-offs. Shark movies became a joke. Even Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge were met with disdain (and with good reason). But sharks are still a popular subject, just not one that we take very seriously anymore.
This brings us to next big shark movie, The Meg which judging from the trailers alone, looks like another campy knock-off movie and while it indeed is campy, it isn’t as much as you would think. When comparing movies, The Meg is closer to Jaws tha…

Summer Praise Mix Tape

A suggestion list for a summer praise "mix tape."
(Photo: Aopsan)
If you are of a certain age, you might remember creating mix tapes of some of the best songs you had on hand or borrowed from friends. (If you are not in that age bracket, you might be interested to know that before the internet and CDs, we had to share our music on cassette tapes. If you don’t know what a cassette tape is, stop reading and ask your parents.) Many of these tapes were created during the summer creating fun music to listen to short trips and what not. You get the idea.

If you are like me, you appreciate praise and worship music, but much of what is out there is too slow for a real summer collection. When you’re on the road, you don’t want music that is going to put you to sleep. Here is a suggested list of fairly new praise songs that will keep your toes tapping and give your spirit a lift at the same time.

"Don’t Ever Stop" by Chris Tomlin

Heavy with the electric guitars and synthesizer, this Tomlin tune could be confused with a dance song and doesn’t sound like your typical Tomlin song. It’s a great way to start out.
Sample lyrics: “Whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is light, lead me in Your way everlasting, don’t ever stop, don’t ever stop.”

"Thrive" by Casting Crowns

This Celtic-sounding - slightly country song is an anthem and reminder for us to not just settle, but to pursue and stronger, bolder walk with Jesus.
Sample Lyrics: “Just to know You and to make You known - We lift Your name on high - Shine like the sun, make darkness run and hide - We know we were made for so much more than ordinary lives- Its time for us to more than just survive - We were made to thrive”

"Never Gonna Let Me Go" by Kristian Stanfill

If you can ignore the bad grammar in the title, this catchy song with its repeating chorus will bring back memories of songs around the campfire with your youth group. Bring out the s’mores.
Sample lyrics: “His love breaking through my heart of stone, Love breathing to awake my bones, Love reaching out to save my soul, Love never gonna let me go.”
