'Puzzle' is Well Made, but a Few Pieces are Missing

Based on the film Rompecabezas, Puzzle is one of those little-known independent films that sneaks into theaters with little to no fanfare, although the fact that it is being promoted “from the producer of Little Miss Sunshine” should help it get noticed somewhat. Puzzle is a quiet, little film about a woman who discovers that jigsaw puzzles are the key to changing her life. While the subject matter doesn’t sound all that exciting, the film really isn’t about puzzles but instead about one finding their voice, or so it appears. It’s also a message film that has its own agenda expecting the audience to agree with the choices of the main character and applaud her “brave” behavior. Frankly, it just feels manipulative.

Directed by Marc Turtletaub, Puzzle’s most impactful scene comes within the first few minutes. We see Agnes (Kelly MacDonald) cleaning up the house and they decorating it for a birthday party. Then we see her serving appetizers while being ignored by the guests. …

What is the Most Annoying Christmas Song Ever?

Everyone has that one holiday song that drives them crazy and it's usually the one song that everyone else in the world seems to love. Last year I made the bold statement that I thought that the "Christmas in the Northwest" by Brenda Kutz is the most annoying song ever. If you live outside of Washington or Oregon, you may not have had a chance to hear this earworm-inducing treasure (and you are lucky), but I had many people come to the defense of this "holiday classic."

This year, I would like to nominate the Irving Berlin song, "Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season" by Perry Como. It features such priceless lyrics like:
"The Holiday season, with the whoop-de-do and hickory dockAnd don't forget to hang up your sock, ‘Cause just exactly at 12 o’clockHe’ll be coming down the chimney, down"
Yeah, that must have taken Berlin weeks to write. I suspect that "Whoop-de-do" and "hickory dock" were just place holders until he got something better - but he never did.

So, what is that one song that drives you crazy every time you hear it? Place your comments here. Come on - let's get this party started!

(There is a lot of chatter on Facebook for the following songs: Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas, Santa Baby, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, Mary Did You Know, Christmas Shoes...what are we missing?)
