NBC will be taking the “Candid Camera” concept to a whole new level Wednesday, April 4, with the premiere of “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.” Viewers got a sneak peek of the new show back in January after the 90th birthday party celebration for Ms. White, and Wednesday’s episode is a repeat of that one.
“Off Their Rockers” is a prank show that features senior citizens pulling crazy pranks on the “young uns.” While not actually performing in the pranks themselves (at least not in the pilot), White does host the show and is its' executive producer. “People have been telling me that I’m ‘off my rocker’ for years,” says White on the NBC show’s website, “Now I can prove it!”
Modeled after a Belgium series, “Off Their Rockers,” the senior featured in the series mean business. Unfortunately, the show follows America’s third favorite past-time of showing elderly people doing inappropriate things for a laugh. Most of the show is just good natured fun, but even though it airs at 8:00 p.m., it is hardly a “family-friendly” show. For instance, in the pilot episode, there is a scene where an older woman propositions a young man at an airport gate asking him to join her in the “mile high” club!
The show stars Michael Alaimo, Lou Beatty, Jr., Ann Benson, Nick De Mauro, Reatha Grey, Richard Herd, Sheila Korsi, Joan Kushell, Emilie Melonas, Richard Reicheg, Peg Shirley, Ron Southart and Michael Yama.
The show’s website explains that “the inimitable and charming White will be featured in brazenly funny sketches, providing saucy commentary between the pranks and sharing her engaging, comical pearls of wisdom.” While I will say that I am a Betty White fan, this is yet another excuse show a grandma-like figure making sexual innuendo comments for a cheap laugh. The sketches are hardly “brazenly funny” and pale in comparison to the actual pranks shown. While I do like this show, I look forward to a time when Hollywood realizes that they don’t have to show seniors doing “naughty” things to be funny.
“Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” airs on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. on NBC. To get an idea of what is in store for the show, watch the clip.
