The Parable of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

The parable of "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving"
Peppermint Patty is less than pleased in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. (ABC)

Although a tale about friends getting together for Thanksgiving, the Peanuts special, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, is really a metaphor about family relationships during the holiday. See if this sounds familiar:

Charlie Brown and his sister, Sally, are preparing to go to their grandmother’s home for dinner when Charlie gets a call from Peppermint Patty who has invited herself and two other friends, (Marcie and Franklin), to Charlie’s place for the holiday. Without getting a word in edgewise, Charlie finds himself hosting a Thanksgiving meal knowing nothing about cooking except how to fill a bowl with cold cereal and making toast. Which begs the question…where are the parents?

Disgraced by the public outburst, Charlie Brown excuses himself from the table without a word. After a brief moment of awkward silence, Marcie reminds Patty that Charlie Brown didn’t invite her, but she invited herself and her friends to event and that she hasn’t been a very good model of thankfulness. After a brief prayer from Linus the theologian and believer of Great Pumpkins, the meal is unveiled. But Peppermint Patty is shocked and then outraged by the display of food. “What’s this?” she bellows. “What blockhead cooked all this? What kind of a Thanksgiving dinner is this? Where’s the turkey, Chuck? Don’t you know anything about Thanksgiving dinners? Where’s the mashed potatoes? Where’s the cranberry sauce? Where’s the pumpkin pie?!” Oh, the humanity.

Salvation Army Bell Ringer Does the Chicken Dance - Video of the Day

On one hand, I like the idea of Salvation Army bell ringers being dignified, but on the other, I have to say that I love the video. And he's not the only one. Who knew that dancing bell ringers was a thing?

Video of the Day: 'Friends' Thanksgiving

Friends was one of those shows where it was its funniest when it wasn't trying to be hip or controversial. Here is one of the best clips from a Thanksgiving episode. (By the way, Monica is wearing a raw turkey on her head in an effort to cheer up Chandler.)

'Saints and Strangers' Presents a Realistic Look at the First Thanksgiving

Review of "Saints and Strangers."
The first Thanksgiving in Saints and Strangers. (National Geographic Channel)

While in the early grades of elementary school, many of us were taught about the first Thanksgiving and how the pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, became friends with the Indians and then ate a lot of food. Years later were taught that life as a pilgrim was a little tougher then what we were lead to believe and as adults, we know this to be true. Still, you may not really have a grasp about how tough things were for everybody in the new world. The National Geographic Channel attempts to bust all myths surrounding the Mayflower voyage in its two-part event, Saints and Strangers.
The four-hour long production is impressive as it is interesting. However, a quick “heads up” that sitting through all four hours in one sitting is a bit much. Fortunately, the channel has repeated showings of the movie in the coming weeks so you can plan accordingly. And don’t get too attached to too many of the passengers as they will not be around for long. It is amazing to see just how ill-prepared these people were from traveling such a large distance and things didn’t get a lot better once they reached land either.

Of the two parts, the latter is the more superior for two reasons. During the Part One …
  1. The folks at National Geographic worked so hard in making sure that everything was accurate, that they forgot to show much of any character development of their cast.
  2. They also squashed any moment of levity in the first two hours.

Video of the Day: A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

If you remember from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving TV special, Charlie states that the only thing he knows how to cook is toast. Hopefully your holiday meal is going a little more smoothly.

Guess Who's Coming Over for Thanksgiving?

Kermit the Frog and Lady Gaga together again. Only this time
she's not wearing him. (Photo: ABC)
I’m not sure if ABC is trying to make Lady Gaga more “family friendly” or the Muppets more risqué or maybe a little bit of both. Certainly, the Muppets stand for family values, but this Thanksgiving special airs at 9:30 p.m. when most of the little tykes will have already gone to bed. Lady Gaga is not known for being subtle, but perhaps she will tone it down a bit for the special. However, one of the guests is drag queen RuPaul, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Video of the Day: Kids React to Thanksgiving Video

Remember the music video “It’s Thanksgiving” by Nicole Westbrook that aired on YouTube last year? (She used a turkey leg as a microphone.) Here are what some kids thought of the video.
