Sympathy for the Devil

Angelina Jolie stars in "Maleficent"
to arrive in theaters in March. Photo: Disney
Much hype has been stirred up for Maleficent, the live action movie about one of the greatest Disney villains to appear in theaters this May. Brought to life by Angelina Jolie, Disney intends to share the “untold story” of the green wonder featured prominently in the 1959 classic animated film, Sleeping Beauty. The trailer for the film looks beautiful and eerie. According to Disney, Maleficent was at one time a beautiful, pure-hearted young woman who because of a betrayal, her pure heart turns to stone.

Disney did something similar last year with the Oz the Great and Powerful, a prequel to the 1939 MGM movie, The Wizard of Oz. In that story, the studio attempted to explain how Theodora turned into the Wicked Witch of the West. In a similar storyline, young Theodora is also a beautiful and innocent victim of deception from her sister, Evanora. It is her rage and bitterness that turns her into the green monster she is so famous for.

Up until this point, these two baddies have always been bad, which has always made it pretty easy to hate them, but now Disney wants to mess us up. For some reason, they want us to feel bad about the villains. Though the concept is intriguing, the end result is a depressing story.

Surprise! The Family Hour is Back

around the TV. Photo: ABC

FROM BELIEFNET

Unfortunately, the days of “The Wonderful World of Disney” and “Little House on the Prairie” are long gone and so is the tradition of family-friendly programming during the 8:00-9:00 p.m. hour. Thankfully, one network has gotten wise and has decided to dump obnoxious and inappropriate fare like “Cougar Town” and “The Bachelor” in favor of the family: ABC. No, this isn’t an advertisement for the network, but it appears that the alphabet network is trying to find the balance of family fare and good ratings. If you like what you see, thank them!

 TV SERIES REVIEW

With the success of TV’s Once Upon a Time (OUAT), a spin-off to the series is certainly not a surprise and focusing on the world of Wonderland is a good move for ABC. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is another family-focused show smartly produced by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horrowitz, the guys responsible for the original series and another little show you might have heard of: Lost.

Though a spinoff and similar in tone, Wonderland is its own show with only brief mentions of the original series. Tonight’s premiere begin in Victorian England with a very young Alice, dressed in the tradition sky blue dress and white apron, arriving out of a rabbit hole excited to tell her father about her adventures. He is equally shocked as he is grateful to see the child as she has been gone for a “very long time.” When she tells him about Wonderland, he brings her to a shrink. Years later, and still stubborn that this land actually exists, Alice makes a return to Wonderland to bring back proof. Something goes wrong along the way and she ends up in a mental institution. (Don’t worry, it gets better.)
