This Day in Pop Culture for March 19

March 19 is World Monopoly Day

World Monopoly Day

Though the complete history of who created the game Monopoly and when remain cloudy. Hasbro officially recognizes March 19, 1935 as the game’s anniversary and dubs it World Monopoly Day. Some say that early versions of the game appeared as early as 1903. Numerous editions of the game have been created over the years as well as spin-off games that feature much of the same themes of the original. The game is licensed in 13 countries and printed in 37 different languages. In 2017, it was announced that three new tokens (T-Rex, Penguin and Rubber Ducky) would be added to the game while three others (Wheelbarrow, Thimble and the Boot) would be taken away. Monopoly has also inspired other projects like the summer time TV game show produced by ABC and aired in 1990. Hollywood has been trying to make a feature film based on the game since 2008 and Broadway is currently working on a new musical show based on the game.

NBC's 'Rise' is a Bait and Switch

Josh Radnor as Lou Mazzuchelli (Photo by Peter Kramer/NBC)

 TV SERIES REVIEW

Rise is a new musical drama from Jason Katims (the executive producer and showrunner of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood) and Jeffrey Seller (producer of the Broadway musical Hamilton) which is pretty impressive. We could use another wholesome TV series, but Rise isn't it.

Rise is said to be based on the book Drama High by Michael Sokolove which is about Lou Volpe, an English teacher from Harry S. Truman High School in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In this show, the teacher’s name is Lou Mazzuchelli (Josh Radnor) and when he becomes burned out teaching English, he requests to become the school’s new drama teacher. Though he has near zero experience with theatre, the principle of the school gives in to his request rather easily. Meanwhile, the interim drama teacher, Tracy (Rosie Perez), who has been rehearsing Grease with the kids for weeks, finds out at a rehearsal that her production has been shelved. Lou asks Tracy to stay on as assistant director though, and after she balks at the idea, she comes around rather quickly.

Lou thinks that what the school really needs is a presentation of the controversial musical, Spring Awakening which is a rock musical based on the German play of the same name from 1891 about sexually frustrated and naive teens in late 19th century Germany. Among other things, the musical features a character who commits suicide, another who dies from an abortion and another who discovers that he’s gay not to mention that the play features numerous obscenities.

This Day in Pop Culture for February 27

The TV show "Cliffhangers" debuted on NBC on February 27, 1979.

‘Cliffhangers’ Debuts

Those of a certain age will remember that on this day in 1979, NBC had attempted to bring back the old movie serial for the modern age with three shows in one. Cliffhangers was three mini genre shows shown back in a one-hour time slot with each episode ending with a … cliffhanger. The interesting test began with the mystery, Stop Susan Williams, which was inspired by The Perils of Pauline and starred Susan Anton. The middle adventure show, The Secret Empire, was inspired by The Phantom Empire and starred Geoffrey Scott. The last was the horror story of The Curse of Dracula which starred Michael Nouri who played the Count living in 1979 San Francisco. Cliffhangers did not fare well against ABC's Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. The show was cancelled after 10 airings which only featured the ending of the Dracula story. The others left the air as … you guessed it … cliffhangers.
