The Stars are Coming Out: 'Splash'

"Splash" premieres Tuesday, March 19
at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.

Of all the celebrity-induced mid-season replacement series coming to television this season (“Celebrity Wife Swap,” “Celebrity Apprentice,” “Dancing with the Stars” etc.), probably the strangest is the newest: “Splash.”

ABC describes “Splash” this way: “Splash” marks the first time 10 celebrities will train and compete in regulation platform and springboard diving at dizzying heights in front of a weekly poolside audience. Each week the celebrities will look fear in the face as they leap off the 10-meter high dive, pair off to complete synchronized stunts, and flip, twist and spin into the depths of the pool below.”

With the success of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” all of the networks have been trying to find the next hit completion show where celebrities learn a new skill. Similar shows with limited success over the years include “Skating with the Stars,” “Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off” and “Stars Earn Stripes.” What makes these shows worth watching is seeing someone of talent learn a new skill and become more human right before our eyes and they prove to the world that they are not as perfect as we sometimes think they are. Given the show’s premise, it could be fascinating or a train wreck. And even possibly, both.

The cast of "Splash"
Olympic gold medal legend, Greg Louganis, will serve as the star’s trainer and each celebrity will be judged by London Olympic U.S. Gold medalist David Boudia and Australian Olympic athlete and USA Dive Team director Steve Foley.

Like other reality competition shows before them, “Splash” invite a few unlikely stars to the party. This just might be the most eclectic mix to date:
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Former basketball player)
  • Louie Anderson (Comedian)
  • Chuy Bravo (Actor and sidekick for “Chelsea Lately”)
  • Drake Bell (Actor from “Drake & Josh”)
  • Rory Bushfield (Extreme skier)
  • Nicole Eggbert (Actress from “Baywatch”)
  • Keishia Knight Pulliam (Played Rudy on “The Cosby Show”)
  • Ndamukong Suh (Football player)
  • Katherine Webb (Miss USA 2012)
  • Kendra Wilkinson (Former girlfriend of Hugh Hefner)

“Splash” is hosted by Joey Lawrence (“Blossom” star and Old Navy commercials) and Charissa Thompson (co-host of ESPN’s SportsNation.) The show premieres on Tuesday, March 19 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.

The Stars are Coming Out

Tis the season for mid-season “star” replacement series. Wow, what a season it is for out-of-work celebrities. At least three series are returning and one is debuting in the next few weeks that feature Hollywood stars – big and small. The list of celebs is crazy big. If these shows are your guilty pleasure, then sit back and enjoy!

Beginning last night (and almost a secret) the truncated version of “Celebrity Wife-Swap” started the race on ABC. Despite its questionable name, last year’s shows proved to be much more interesting and a whole lot less tacky than you would think.

Kate Gosslin and kids (ABC)
ABC describes the show this way: “Celebrity Wife Swap” puts a new spin on ABC's critically-acclaimed reality series, "Wife Swap," by delving into the lives of celebrities. This season two mothers will switch lifestyles, children and homes (but not bedrooms) as they embark on a journey of self discovery. Each mother will be given the chance to see how the other deals with the pressures of being in the spotlight, and each couple will have an opportunity to remember how and why they fell in love.”

Kendra Wilkinson and family. (ABC)
Last year, “Celebrity Wife-Swap” included six episodes. This year they are bringing only three. The three pairings this time around is Coolio/ Mark McGrath, Alan Thicke/Gilbert Gottfried and last night’s episode which featured Kate Gosselin/Kendra Wilkinson. You probably couldn’t find two more opposite women on TV. Gosselin of course is a single mom with eight children. Wilkinson is married, has only one child and a nanny. Gosselin works all the time and relaxes very little. Wilkinson – just the reverse. Gosselin is known for her family values, Wilkinson is a former Playboy centerfold. However, just like last year, just when you think you already know these people, they surprise you – in a good way. Both celebrity moms take the challenge seriously and leave the challenge respecting the importance of family.

“Celebrity Wife Swap” continues for the next two weeks Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.

Other shows coming your way:
  • Celebrity Apprentice – March 3 at 9:00 p.m. on NBC
  • Dancing with the Stars – March 18 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC
  • Splash – March 19 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC
