Enter to Win Tickets to 'Paul, Apostle of Christ'

Paul, Apostle of Christ
Jim Caviezel as Luke and James Faulkner as Paul. (Affirm Films)

When writer and director Andrew Hyatt began working on the film Paul, Apostle of Christ, he started the project by looking at scripture. While imprisoned during the latter days of his life, Paul was visited by Luke. Unfortunately, watching a full-length movie of two men talking to each other in a jail cell wouldn’t be too thrilling so Hyatt knew he had to go to work hard to not only tell a story of truth, but also make that story entertaining. Too many directors before him have made that very mistake.

“We committed to create a film true to the biblical account of Paul’s life but also one that is dramatic and engaging,” said Producer T.J. Berden. “The trials faced by early Christians and their faith and bravery in spite of them will amaze audiences.”

Hyatt and his crew took a large amount of time to not only get the story accurate and authentic in detail, but they also strived to create intriguing characters and dramatic scenes. Affirm Films, the studio who has brought this project to life, promises that Paul, Apostle of Christ will be a film that won’t shy away from presenting the reality of fear, danger and persecution that many believers during the time faced. Practicing Christian faith often meant a death sentence in ancient Rome and often brought about by horrific means.

“The film shows what a deadly dangerous place the Roman world was for the early Christian church, and it shows how Paul prepared the faithful to continue living out their beliefs in the face of it,” says Hyatt.

Enter to Win 2 Tickets to ‘Same Kind of Different as Me’

Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou star in Same Kind of Different as Me
Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou star in Same Kind of Different as Me.
(Paramount/Pure Flix Entertainment)

Those who complain that faith-based movies are “bad,” cheaply made, poorly written and/or feature bad actors haven’t seen one in awhile. In recent years, movies like God’s Not Dead, Heaven is For Real, Miracles from Heaven and The Case for Christ have surprised both moviegoers and critics alike. Chances are good that Same Kind of Different as Me, opening in theaters on October 20, 2017, will be more of the same.

Starring Greg Kinnear, Renee Zellweger and Djimon Hounsou, Same Kind of Different as Me is a partnership between Paramount Pictures and Pure Flix Entertainment and is based on the New York Times best-selling book of the same name by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. And even better, it’s based on a true story. Kinnear and Hounsou have the honor of playing out the author’s stories.

The story is about a successful couple, Ron and Debbie Hall, whose marriage begins to fall apart after it is revealed that Ron has been having an affair. Fed up with him, Debbie gives Ron a choice to leave or stay, but if he stays, he must remain truthful and do what she asks of him. When she asks that he help serve at a homeless shelter, he would rather just write a large check.

I was recently given a five minute section of the finished film to preview and while I haven’t seen the whole film, what I saw gives a good idea of what this film is all about. Yes, you expect Kinnear and Zellweger to give it their all, but I was impressed by the other actors as well. The short scenes were strong enough to evoke a varitey of emotions and even choked me up a bit. I can only imagine what the rest of the film will be like. The dialogue is well-written and even surprising. To give you an idea of what to expect, check out this “behind the scenes” feature.

I can’t wait to see this movie and I’m thrilled to be given the opportunty to give away a pair of tickets as well. But you’ll have to act quick. The deadline is this Monday, October 16, 2017.

You can enter up to three entries to win a pair of tickets below. Deadline to enter is August 17, 2017.

All Saints is based on the inspiring true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock. After trading in his corporate sales career to become a pastor, Michael’s first assignment is All Saints, a quaint country church with a dozen members. It comes with a catch: he has to close the church doors for good and sell the prime piece of land on which it sits. While developers eagerly eye the property and the congregation mourns the inevitable, Michael and his family look forward to moving on to an established church where they can put down roots. But when the church hesitantly begins welcoming Karen (kuh-REN) refugees from Burma—former farmers striving for a fresh start in America—Michael feels called to an improbable new mission.

Win 4 Tickets to See The Smurfs!

Enter to win 4 tickets to "Smufs: The Lost Village."
Smurfs: The Lost Village comes to theaters on April 7. (Sony Pictures)

Smurfs: The Lost Village is coming to theaters this Friday and you have the chance to see if for free just by entering the contest below. The winner will be selected on Friday, April 7 so enter now.

In this new animated tale of the Smurfs, the biggest question about the blue guys is brought up: why is Smurfette the only girl? The answer might have something to do with a mysterious "Lost Village," but in order for Smurfette and her friends (Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty) to get there, they will have to go through the Forbidden Forest against the advice of Poppa Smurf. And, they'll have to get there before the evil wizard Gargamel does.

While this movie is completely new, the filmmakers actually went back to the original artwork from Peyo – the Belegian artist Pierre Culliford who created the Smurfs comic books in 1958 - to truly capture the look and feel of the classic Smurf’s world. “Peyo’s work has a buoyance and a lightness of being,” says direct Kelly Asbury. “For the Forbidden Forest and the Lost Village, we wanted it feel like something that the audience was experiencing with the Smurfs for the first time.”

Smurfs: The Lost Village features the voices of Demi Lovato, Rainn Wilson, Joe Manganiello, Jack McBrayer, Danny Pudi, Michelle Rodriguez, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter, Mandy Patinkin and Julia Roberts.

While waiting for the movie to come out, you might want to visit the official movie website where you can “Meet the Characters,” learn how to draw a Smurf, find Smurf-inspired recipes (like Marshroom House, Smurfberry Pie, Strawberry Cake and Popscicles) a Smurf quiz and other games.

‘Captive’ – See the Whole Story on DVD

Review of the movie "Captive."
David Oyelowo and Kate Mara (Paramount)
One of the best faith-based films of 2015, Captive, is now available on DVD and if you only seen the movie on the big screen, you haven’t seen it all.

Captive is not an “inspired by true events” movie. It’s a movie based on real events with a subject matter that you won’t normally find in a Christian movie. (What was the last faith-based movie you seen that features a drug abuser as the heroine?) It’s the story of how hardened criminal, Brian Nichols, broke out of the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, Georgia, killed a bunch of people and then listened to a reading of Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life while he held a single mother at gunpoint. That’s it in a nutshell. Praise the Lord.

While the story is unbelievable, the movie is very good. David Oyelowo (The Butler, Selma, A Most Violent Year), a soft-spoken British actor is totally unrecognizable here as Brian Nichols. He’s big, tough and scary. After killing a judge, a court reporter, a sheriff’s deputy and a federal agent, Nichols is on the run. He ends up at the new home of Ashely Smith (Kate Mara from The Martian) in Duluth, Georgia who is trying to make a fresh new start with her life. She is a meth addict going on recovery and doing a terrible time of it. She has to quit fully or she’ll never see her daughter full time. A friend has given her a copy of Warren’s book to help give her strength, but she isn’t interested.

The God-Approved Little Black Book

Review of Crossway's ESV Men's Devotional Bible.
You can judge this book by its cover (Crossway Books)
It seems kinda silly trying to do a book review on the Bible, That could take years. But please enjoy this short observation.

It’s amazing really how many of us turn to Google before turning to the Bible for sound advice and guidance. In our “there’s an app for that” world, sometimes a man just wants something simple, that doesn’t need to be plugged in and will never fail. The ESV Men’s Devotional Bible is a real, hardback book with thin pages and that make that crinkly sound when you turn them. It comes in basic black. It’s not frilly in the least. You can judge this book by its cover. It’s important, but not pretentious. It’s classic and yet contemporary.

The 2015 version of this Bible includes 365 new devotions, brand new book introductions and 14 brand new articles that were written specifically for men with topics based on singleness, marriage, fathering, leadership, pornography and on and on and on. The English Standard Version Bible is a literal translation with word-for-word accuracy.

“The goal of the ESV Men’s Devotional Bible is to strengthen and encourage men through the life-giving Word of God and sound devotional content aimed at nurturing godliness,” says the Crossway, the publisher of this Bible. Those might sound like lofty words, and the fact that over 100 Bible scholars helped in the creation of this translation may give some cause for concern. However, this version is very “readable.

I recently received my copy of this Bible and I love it. Right off the bat in the book of Genesis is a short article about God’s purpose in marriage that is not weighted down with man’s opinions on the husbands “role,” but instead focuses on God’s true intent. This is a book of encouragement, not condemnation.

Three ways to enter to win your own copy of this Bible. Choose one or all three:
1. Visit the Writer of Pop Facebook page
2. Follow the Writer of Pop Twitter feed
3. Subscribe to the Writer of Pop Feedburner updates
The deadline to enter is November, 30 2015.

Win a copy of 'Destiny'

A while ago I was given the chance to interview Bishop T.D. Jakes at a press junket for the movie Black Nativity. Though not in the movie, Jakes is one of the forces behind it. The room that they placed the pastor in was incredible in size – a lot bigger than was necessary for a short interview. In addition to the room, Jakes has a large personality and a deep baritone voice. I felt like I was meeting with royalty. However, within seconds, I was put to ease.
