Christmas Music Preview for 2017

 MUSIC 

For some, Christmas is all about playing the classics from Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. And while that is all good and fine, there is also new music to consider from everyone from TobyMac to Jonathan Cain (from Journey) plus Pentatonix have added a few new songs to last year’s hit album and the soundtrack to the upcoming Christmas animation movie, The Star. Here is a sample of what to expect on store shelves this season:

Bryan and Katie Torwalt - Christmas
Jesus Culture worship leaders, Bryan and Katie Torwalt bring to the season a four-song EP which features three classic Christmas songs along with a revisited song, "Emmanuel (God with Us Forever)," from their 2016 project Champion.

Hanson – Finally It’s Christmas
That’s right, the MMM Bop boys are back with an all-new Christmas album which features four original tracks, and eight updated classics. Hanson brings an organic rock ‘n’ roll energy to the album, featuring iconic favorites like Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas," Stevie Wonder’s “Someday At Christmas” and Aretha Franklin’s “Winter Wonderland” along with a re-imagined arrangement of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time” and lively renditions of modern classics like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas.”

Melanie Penn is a singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. After having success on the national Broadway touring stage, Penn shifted her attention to her career as a songwriter and artist, desiring to sing her own words rather than those of others. Melanie Penn’s first-ever Christmas album contains nine original songs and one classic carol retelling the Christmas story through the perspective of the angels and people who lived through it: Mary, Joseph, the wise men, the innkeeper, and even the star of Bethlehem.

Produced by her husband, Jacob Sooter, Meredith Andrews new Christmas album includes new versions of "Behold the Savior," "He Has Come for Us (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen)" and "The Gospel Changes Everything," which were originally released on Andrews' 2013 Behold the Savior EP. Andrews created a project full of well-known traditional Christmas songs along with several new original tunes including "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus," and special personal moments with the album's conclusion with "Away In A Manager / The Gospel Changes Everything" featuring her son, Maverick Sooter.

Perhaps presenting the most unique Christmas album this year, Tenth Avenue North shares a 10-track album featuring favorite Christmas tunes in the style of that era and they’ve included a number of friends as well including Jon McLaughlin, Zach Williams, Britt Nicole, Colton Dixon and Sarah Reeves. The album also includes the group’s 2011’s holiday hit, “Deck the Halls” and two brand new original songs:“Mistletoe (The Christmas Sweater Song)” and "The First Christmas."

The Star: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
The soundtrack to The Star assembles new music from a bevy of powerhouse superstars befitting of the cast’s blockbuster pedigree. Kirk Franklin, Kelsea Ballerini, Zara Larsson, and more serve up new tracks recorded specifically for The Star. The album also features for the first time, the voices of Mariah Carey’s twins Monroe and Moroccan Cannon accompany her, becoming a heavenly family choir in the process.
