This Day in Pop Culture for September 2

Keanu Reeves was born on September 2, 1964

Keanu Reeves is Born

Keanu Charles Reeves, who was born on this day in 1964, has led a pretty crazy life so far. His father left him and his mother when Reeves was just three years old. His mother married at least four times. He attended four different high schools, struggled with dyslexia and never earned his high school diploma. His first acting job was theatre production of Damn Yankees, his first television appearance was for the show Hangin' In (1984) and his first movie was Youngblood (1986). But most of us “met” Reeves when he starred with Sandra Bullock in 1994's Speed. While he has been a fan favorite, he has also been nominated for numerous Golden Raspberry awards for bad acting.

Oakland Bay Bridge Becomes World’s Widest Bridge

The original San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened on November 12, 1936 – six months before the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge features two sections: the Western section, a double suspension bridge which connects to Yerba Buena Island and the newer eastern section which connects the island to Oakland. In 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake caused a section of the Eastern section’s upper deck to collapse onto the lower one and was closed for a month. Reconstruction of that section of the bridge began in 2002 and it was reopened on this day in 2013. It cost about $6.5 billion and was given the title of the world’s widest bridge according to Guinness World Records.
