This Day in Pop Culture for March 24

Jessica Chastain was born on March 24, 1977.

Jessica Chastain is Born

Jessica Michelle Chastain was born in a small town near Sonoma, California on this day in 1977. She developed a love for acting at the age of seven when her grandmother took her to see a live production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. While in high school Chastain admits that she was a loner, felt like a misfit and would cut classes to read Shakespeare. With too many absences during her senior year, she did not qualify to graduate (however she did receive a diploma later as an adult) but in 1998 she made her stage debut playing, what else, Juliet, in a production of Romeo and Juliet. After attending Juilliard, she signed a talent holding deal with John Wells, a television producer. Chastain appeared in a number of TV shows and continued to take roles for the stage. In 2008 she made her film debut in Jolene. She earned her first Oscar nomination for her role in The Help and her second for Zero Dark Thirty. (She won a Golden Globe for the latter.) Chastain’s most recent film is The Zookeeper’s Wife. Jessica is also the founder of Freckle Films which was created to promote diversity in film.

Elvis was inducted into the US Army on March 24,1958.

Elvis is in the Army

On this day in 1958, hip-swinging Elvis Presley was inducted into the United States Army and since publicity makes the world go round, Elvis’ manager was on hand with a photographer to capture this historic day. Always the professional, the 23-year-old showed no nervousness or sadness unlike his mother, Gladys, who was visibly upset. While away on his two year stint with the army, Elvis’ mother passed away and  Elvis met the future Mrs. Presley, Priscilla Beaulieu, who at the time was just 14 years old.
