This Day in Pop Culture for March 1

Yellowstone became the U.S.'s first national park on March 1, 1872.

The First National Park is Established

It was on this day in 1872 that President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law that Yellowstone, located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho become the first national park of the United States if not the world. It is the home of the Old Faithful Geyser, hundreds of species of animals, the subject of many Disney cartoon shorts featuring Humphrey the Bear and Forest Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore and was used as a model for the fictional Jellystone Park featured in the classic Yogi Bear cartoons. It spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles of land which includes lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one the largest high-elevation lakes in North America.

Justin Bieber was born on March 1, 1994.

Justin Bieber is Born

On this day in 1994, Justin Drew Bieber was born in London, Ontario. No one really heard of him until 2007 when the 12-year-old sang Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” during a singing competition where he came in 2nd place. However, his life forever changed when his mother, Patricia Mallette, uploaded a copy of the video on YouTube for family and friends. Mallette continued to upload other videos and the Biebs created quite a following. In 2010 his single “Baby” became an overwhelming huge hit. His first album, My World 2.0 debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and over 5 million copies were sold around the world. Bieber’s clean cut, good Christian boy image worked for him for the first couple of years but fame and the friends that come with it, soiled that image. America’s favorite boy grew up too fast. Today he continues to struggle being a good example and living a life like the superstar that he is. His latest album, Purpose, came out August 28, 2015.
