On this day in 1997, James Cameron’s $200 million dollar film, Titanic, opened in theaters. The fictional story was based on real life events that happened aboard the luxury ocean liner that sank after it struck an iceberg. The film became the highest grossing moving in history and it won 11 Academy Awards (12 if you include the embarrassing “I’m the king of the world!” speech he gave when receiving the Oscar for Best Director.) Cameron was also the writer of the film and did extensive research to make footage of the ship’s interior historically accurate as possible.
