Movie Soundtracks to Move You

These are exciting times for faith-based movies. It seems that every other month a new one is making its’ way into theaters. What is even more unique is that the soundtracks to these films are also becoming increasingly more popular.

Here are nine of the most recent releases:

SON OF GOD: Music Inspired By The Epic Motion Picture and the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
The Roma Downy/Mark Burnett currently blockbuster, Son of God, has not one but two companion CDs out now. The soundtrack features all the original score by legendary Hans Zimmer with additional music by Steven Stern and CeeLo Green. The “inspiration” album contains music by Francesca Battistelli, Chris August, For King & Country, Group 1 Crew, Dara Maclean, Sidewalk Prophets, Point of Grace, Jason Castro, Everfound, Love & the Outcome, Big Daddy Weave and Meredith Andrews. Read the movie review>


God's Not Dead - The Motion Picture SoundtrackThe movie God’s Not Dead, which focuses on a college student who goes toe to toe with a professor about whether God is real or not, makes its way into theaters on March 21st  - hopefully in one near you. It stars Kevin Sorbo, Dean Cain and Shane Harper. With it comes a highly anticipated soundtrack from  from a partnership with Pure Flix Entertainment and InPop Records. The album features songs from the Newsboys, Superchick, Shane Harper, Tricia, Manic Driv, Jj Weeks Band, Hover Balcony, Will Musser, Jimmy Needham and Stellar Kart.

NoahEven the controversial religious Darren Aronofsky Noah movie comes with its own soundtrack by Nonesuch Records. It features music composed by Clint Mansell and played in part by the Kronos Quartet. Mansell and the Quartet have played for Aronofsky’s other films, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain as well. The movie itself stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins and Emma Watson. It arrives in theaters later this month. 

Heaven Is For Real - Songs Inspired By The Film & Best-Selling Book
Inspired by the #1 New York Time best-selling book of the same name, "Heaven is for Real" brings to the screen the true story of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son's extraordinary, life-changing experience, with the world. The movie, produced by Tri-Star Pictures, will be released on April 16th and stars Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly, Connor Corum, Margo Martindale, Thomas Haden Church. Provident’s soundtrack album will feature music by Casting Crowns, Building 429, Third Day, Tenth Avenue North, Darlene Zschech, Matt Maher, Steven Curtis Chapman, Brandon Heath, One Sonic Society, Read You and Me and Colton Burpo.

Black Nativity
Released last November, RCA Inspiration released the soundtrack to Fox Searchlight Picture’s musical drama, Black Nativity. Though “technically” a Christmas album, much of the music can be enjoyed throughout the year as many of the songs deal with family relations rather than Christmas. Executive produced by Grammy Award winning artist and producer Raphael Saadiq, the album features gospel classics and news songs performed by the cast including Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Jacob Latimore, Tyrese Gibson, Mary J. Blige and Nasir  “Nas” Jones. Read the movie review>

Gimme Shelter
Last fall, Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate released the touching movie Gimme Shelter that stared Vanessa Hudgens, Rosario Dawson, Brendan Fraser, James Earl Jones, Ann Dowd and Dascha Polanco. With that, Milan Records has released the official soundtrack from the movie with an original score composed by Olafur Arnalds (Broadchurch, Another Happy Day). Also included is the song “A Mother’s Prayer” by Celine Dion and other songs by Lana Del Rey, Jessie J. and Paul Haslinger. Read the movie review>

Grace UnPlugged
Last August, Sparrow Records released the soundtrack to the pastor’s kid drama, Grace Unplugged, a Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate film, that starred AJ Michalka, James Denton, Kevin Pollack, Jamie Grace. While the album doesn’t contain the film’s score, it does feature all of the music plus some other songs inspired by the movie. It is a great compilation album with music by AJ Michalka, Chris Tomlin, Colton Dixon, Jamie Grace, Josh Wilson, Luminate, Nine Lashes, Shawn McDonald and TobyMac. Read the movie review>

Ultimate Life
Last year’s Michael Landon Jr.’s film, The Ultimate Life, slipped in and out of theaters without many people noticing. It starred Peter Fonda, Bill Cobbs, David Mann, Drew Waters, Logan Bartholomew, Ali Hilli, Lee Meriwether, Abigail Mavity and Jack DePew. Nevertheless, it too came with a soundtrack album featuring a score by Mark Mckenzie and features one song by Tamela Mann. It is produced by Varese Records.
