TOMS is causing trouble again. You may recall that last April, TOMS, well-known for their shoes, dubbed April 16th “One Day Without Shoes” day and encouraged people all across the country to do what they normally would do that day but without socks or shoes. The stunt was an effort to show that children around the world need shoes. Well, Blake Mycoskie and his company are at it again. This Thursday, they want you to wear sunglasses.

October 10 is “World Sight Day” and you can show your support painlessly by wearing sunglasses. In many parts of our country, the weather is less then optimal to be wearing sunglasses at all right now, but TOMS is encouraging people to wear their shades all day long – inside and out , rain or shine,  to help raise awareness for visual impairment and blindness worldwide.

Why is a shoe company concerned with eyesight? Because since 2011, TOMS has also had their own eyewear brand and since that time, over 150,000 people have had their sight restored thanks to this program. Like TOMS shoes, the company has been able to provide prescription glasses, medical treatment and sight-saving surgery for every pair of glasses sold. Also like the shoes, these glasses are not cheap, but are well –crafted and stylish.

Here are the facts:
  • 285 million people are visually impaired or blind
  • 80 percent of visual impairment worldwide can be cured or prevented.
  • 9 out of 10 people with visual impairment live in developing countries
  • Individuals with vision loss often have to give up their jobs or other income-generating activities.
  • Over 12 million children worldwide have visual impairment that can be improved with glasses.
  • 2/3 of people who are blind are female

Hats off and glasses on to you TOMS!
