'Raise the Roof' at Washington State Fair

FROM EXAMINER.COM

Well, you can still “Do the Puyallup” but don’t call it “The Puyallup Fair” anymore. The fair has gone through an identity crisis this past year and is now officially called, The Washington State Fair. The commercials are a bit more “highbrow” than the ones in the past and it seems like they are attempting to make the fair more of a cultural experience and shy away from a county bumpkin image that some people have of it.

Still, much of the fair remains the same. Hot Scones can be found around every corner, there are still plenty of animals to see, somebody is deep frying anything they can get their hands on and the fair still supports Christian music by bringing in some of the best musicians around.

This year, the big event is called “Raise the Roof”  to be held on Tuesday, September 17 at 7:00 pm. and features four acts including Jeremy Camp, Tenth Avenue North, Kutless and Jars of Clay. While tickets are not cheap, ($20-$40), they do include gate admission to the fair as well, a $12.50 value, so that helps a bit.

A Little Info about the Acts:

JEREMY CAMP: While Jeremy Camp is an ordained minister, he has dedicated his life to sharing the news of God through his music. GMA has recognized him as New Artist of the Year in 2004, Male Vocalist of the Year 2004-5, and Rock Recorded Song of the Year for “Stay” in 2005. Camp just released his latest album, Reckless on Feb. 12, 2013. He holds five Dove Awards, three ASCAP Songwriter of the Year and one Songwriter/Artist of the Year awards, and an American Music Award nomination.

TENTH AVENUE NORTH: Their songs have saturated Christian radio airwaves with such memorable songs as "Love is Here," "Hold My Heart," and "By Your Side," which was a number one single that was Billboard magazine's No. 3 overall Christian song for the decade. Last August Tenth Avenue North released their third album, The Struggle with “Losing” as the lead single. The album debuted at No 1 on Billboard's Christian and Rock album charts.

KUTLESS: Originally from Portland, Oregon, Kutless has sold 2 million records and played worldwide to millions of believers since 2002. In 2006, the band made a dent in pop culture history as an episode of NBC’s “Scrubs” incorporated a significant portion of the song "All the Words" from their second album, Sea of Faces during the final scene. Kutless has been nominated for nine GMA Dove Awards.

JARS OF CLAY: In 1995 Jars of Clay released their self-titled album. One of their original songs, “Flood” climbed the charts on mainstream radio stations, becoming one of the biggest mainstream hits ever by a band on a Christian label. The album became multi-Platinum, reaching No. 12 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. The band has consistently created its own unique sound with strong lyrics. The band’s latest 11th studio album, “Inland,” will be released very soon.
