Right now, under the arches of the Pacific Science Center, everything looks quiet. No hustle and bustle of guests entering and exiting the doors of the exhibits. However, on the inside, it’s a different story.

Currently, most of the PSC is closed for their annual September reset. Most of the exhibits will re-open on September 21 and during this time, a whole new exhibit is being built. “RACE: Are We So Different?” will open September 28 and it’s unlike anything the PSC has ever had before.

Since the traveling exhibits initial run in 2007, “RACE” has been raising eyebrows in over 25 cities across the US. Developed by the Science Museum of Minnesota and in collaboration with the American Anthropological Association, “RACE” deconstructs historical, scientific and social ideas of race. The exhibit will focus on three main themes:
  • The everyday experience of race
  • The history of the idea of race in the US
  • The science that is challenging some commonly held ideas about race

According to PSC, contemporary scientific understandings of race and human variation are more complex than most of us realize. “RACE” will provide an informative starting point for guests to re-evaluate their own beliefs and their everyday experiences through hard scientific data, compelling personal stories and hands-on activities that creatively challenge guests to "see" through a different lens.

In addition, “RACE: Are We So Different?” offers youth group leaders, employers, educators, and other community leaders a unique opportunity to start discussions about cultural perceptions.  Whether you are looking to plan a visit during the day with a small group or a large-scale reception with private exhibit access, don’t miss this chance to engage your group with this experience. For information about planning a private event, contact the Events Department at  (206) 443-2387. For information about special group rates and to book your group's visit, contact the Sales Department at (206) 443-3611. To book a school group field trip, call (206) 443-2925.

“RACE” will be at the Pacific Science Center from September 28, 2013-January 5, 2014. PSC is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from  10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday-Holidays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and is closed Tuesdays. The PSC is located at 200 2nd Ave N., Seattle, WA 98109.
