Christmas albums appear to be a necessary evil for every artist whether Christian or secular. At some point, everyone puts one out. Some are good, some are bad and many are just “okay.” The basic rule of thumb for most of these is that if you like the artist, you will most likely like their rendition of favorite Christmas tunes. This year, Jeremy Camp offers up his first for your review.

“Christmas: God With Us” is a simple album filled with ten holiday songs with one original Jeremy Camp song, the title track. It is also his best on the new album. While clearly a song about the famous nativity scene, the song could certainly be used as a worship song throughout the year as well. “God with Us” borrows lyrics from other classics and mixes in his own which gives the song a stronger meaning:
“Hallelujah, the Angels singTo certain poor shepherds in fields where they layHallelujah, the world will seeThe fullness of His majesty Emmanuel, our humble KingWe give You our hearts as an offeringYou laid down Your crown and became as dustEmmanuel, God With Us.”
The song is upbeat, has a slight twang to it and features a beautiful cello as well. The song is about hope during dark times, something Camp is familiar with.

In 2000, Camp released his first album and married his first wife, Melissa. It was a short marriage as Melissa was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and died just a few months later. Some of his earlier works reflect the emotional time he went through. “I Still Believe,” one of Camp’s most famous songs, was the first song he wrote after her death.

In 2003, Camp married Adrienne. Together, they have two daughters and one son. In May 2011, Camp wrote his first book also titled, “I Still believe” which chronicles the highs and lows of the singer’s life. As a companion piece, Camp released a “greatest hits” collection – again titled, “I Still Believe” in March of 2012. Next year, an updated version of his book will be released in February along with his next album project, “Reckless.”

“Christmas: God With Us” features both sacred and secular favorites such as “Jingle Bell Rock” (which is done “right” and not watered down like so many other versions of the hit), “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Let it Snow.” In addition to some of the classics like “Joy to the World,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “Away in a Manger,” Camp also includes his version of the more modern song, “Mary Did You Know” made famous by Michel English. Each song has Camp’s own spin which is not hokey, but genuine, like the man himself.
